Beyond Stipends and Release Time: Providing Incentives to STEM Faculty
The MSP is a major national research and development effort that supports innovative partnerships to improve K-12 student achievement in mathematics and science. Deep engagement of STEM disciplinary faculty is a hallmark of the MSP effort. Traditionally, STEM faculty are not involved in this type of activity in a substantial way, beyond service and outreach work. Creating an environment hospitable to deep and lasting involvement is critical.
The presentation draws on data and findings from the Westat's RETA grant on the effect of STEM faculty engagement in MSP projects. While the grant has a much broader coverage, the presentation specifically examines who are the STEM faculty participating in the MSPs, and explores different incentives that projects and IHEs can provide to invite substantial and sustained STEM faculty participation in educational reforms.
